THI update 17-23 August 2026.

Finally the heat eased across all GB last week, from Wednesday onwards, as daily average THIs fell to the low 60’s by the end of the week (av temps 15-19°C) – the lowest levels seen on farm since the first week of July…

Maximum THI was 79 and recorded in both our Dorset shed and a shed in Monmouthshire (30.2°C @ 52 & 56% RH respectively) with the majority of sheds peaking for the week in the mid- to high 20’s C (THI 70-76) and a number of Scottish sheds failing to breach 20°C at all showing the cooling as we headed north, again!

Hours above THI 67 were also in line with the first week of July with zero in Scotland but Midlands and south England stubbornly holding up at 56 (33%) and 70 hours (41%) respectively.

It will take weeks/months for the effects of the extended heat events of summer to be fully corrected with hoof health and fertility impacted as well as cows which were dry during the heat having yields impacted and their calf’s health and long term production also challenged.

This week is cooler so hopefully cows can relax and normal behaviour and welfare returns…🤞🏻🐄☀️🌡️
