Summer is supposed to have ended but it…

Summer is supposed to have ended but it still seems to be clinging on (during the days at least!) in some areas but this is the final THI update of summer 2026 as we end with a review/overview of the entire summer as technically the heat stress risk period ended at the end of September…

We’ve seen a distinct south to north divide this summer so there have been some extreme challenges for cows and farmers the further south we went, for extended periods from late June until late August. Further north didn’t escape completely and we had two early(ish by GB patterns) heat events in late May and late June and in fact the worst THIs all summer were in late June!

Effects of heat stress will still be around for many in the form of fertility impacts and also hoof health and may take a few more weeks before the the effects have fully disappeared (they say up to 3 cycles for full recovery in fertility for example) and foot trimmers will tell you the impact of longer standing times through summer.

Hopefully the info has been useful in some way this summer, if you want to discuss any aspects then always get in contact otherwise THI updates will (probably) be back in May 2027… 🐄☀️
