THI update 6-12 July 2026

The heat returned last week as predicted and left cows facing extreme heat conditions across most of GB all week. What seems slightly uncomfortable for us (last Monday and Tuesday for example) is nothing like that for dairy cows, and certainly not for modern high yielding dairy cows!

Red dominated the map as midlands and south of England saw all 7 days with average THI at 68 or more meaning milk yield will have likely been impacted whilst Wales (6/7), the north of England (5/7) and Scotland (4/7) didn’t escape unscathed. The yo-yo effect from the highs of 3 weeks ago to the relative benign conditions of 2 weeks ago and then back to last weeks’ extremes are what we find hardest to manage on farm and shows that we need to maintain a consistent approach to managing heat – hours over THI 67 each week with over 60% of hours exceeding this in some regions.

This week continues to be difficult for cows as we are at the traditional hot point of UK summer so watch out for signs of heat stress as heat persists 🐄☀️🌡️
